Pinochet's Thugs
General Augusto Pinochet Urgate tolerated no dissent. Not even exile mattered to him. Two prominent potential leaders of the Chilean opposition in exile were targeted for death. His predecessor as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean armed forces General Carlos Prats González was the first to die in neighbouring Argentina in 1974. Two years later, former Chilean Ambassador to the USA Orlando Letelier del Solar was assassinated in Washington DC along with his assistant Ronnie Moffett. Both attacks were car bombs.

Several people were convicted of the murders. Among them was CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) agent, Michael Townley, who also worked for the DINA (Direccíon de Inteligencia Nacional). Prats presented an obstacle to the success of a coup. He was provoked into a bizarre confrontation with Alejandrina Cox, which resulted in him shooting at her car. Cox and Prats later publicly apologised to each other, but the loss of standing with his subordinates ultimately damaged both him and Allende beyond repair. Prats offered to resign, but Allende refused.

Prats courageously put down a coup attempt two months later, but resigned in August 1973. Pinochet was promoted and the last major obstacle to the military seizing power had gone – Prats was a follower of the Schneider Doctrine. A year later Prats was dead. Townley was involved in both assassinations. He also supplied chemical weapons to Pinochet's regime. He was implicated in the assassination of Prats by head of the DINA, Juan Manuel Contreras Sepúlveda.

Both Prats and Letelier opposed the coup and Pinochet and were potential Presidents in waiting – hence their assassinations. Opposition leader Bernardo Leighton was shot and seriously injured in Rome in 1975. The attack was ordered by Contreras. An extradition request from Italy failed as Contreras was prosecuted in Chile. His deputy Raúl Iturriago Neumann is currently in jail in Chile as well. He is wanted by Italy to serve a sentence imposed in absentia over the assassination attempt on Leighton and also by Argentina over the assassination of Prats and in Spain as well.

The Harder They Squeal
The DINA was closed down by Pinochet in 1977 as relations between Contreras and him soured. Contreras was implicated in numerous assassinations and disappearances. He is currently serving 289 years imprisonment for kidnapping, forced disappearances and murder. He implicated Pinochet in both assassinations.

An Argentinian request for his extradition to face trial for the assassination of Prats and his wife Sofia was refused, but Contreras was punished in Chile later. He implicated numerous people in the assassinations of Letelier and Prats, including the despicable terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, whose crimes will be featured in soon to be published articles by our American Correspondent John Little.

Some of the people involved in these murders were jailed, but others evaded prosecution altogether. Townley confessed his involvement in both murders, but as part of plea deal. He is currently free as part of the Federal Witness Protection Program.

Meanwhile, Enrique Arranciaba Clavel was a DINA agent in Argentina implicated in Prats' assassination. He served twenty years in Argentina for it and was sent back to Chile to face further investigation. However, the architect of the thuggery evaded justice until crusading Judge Baltasar Garzón demanded Pinochet face trial in Spain 1998 – an effort that was shamefully thwarted by Britain.
